Blogs in Education

What is Blog?
A Web log, usually shortened to blog, is a set of personal commentaries on issues the author deems important. It contains text, images, and links to related information on other blogs, web pages, and media. Readers can reply easily and thus participate in a discussion in which they share knowledge and reflect on the topic. Blogs promote open dialogue and encourage community building in which both the bloggers and commenters exchange opinions, ideas, and attitudes. Entries are posted in reverse chronological order.
Implications for Educational uses
Blogging is the new way to express oneself and have an authentic audience.
The implications for students include writing about issues and thus improving writing skills, learning from each other, thinking through topics thoroughly enough to offer an opinion or add information, peer editing, finding a community of others interested in the same topic, and becoming confident in sharing, what they know.
Teachers can create blog pages to communicate with students and parents about content and to have an ongoing open dialogue about coursework.
Administrators can replace printed announcements and meeting agendas with blogs that allow for communication with the staff.
Warning
The danger is that blogs that students find when researching a topic may contain highly subjective or inaccurate information. However, because blogs attract an audience by having a good reputation, the audience itself may serve as a filter to protect a blog’s credibility by making sure that commenters don’t post inaccurate of offensive remarks.

  6. Based on the ICT tools I have learnt, I am in particular interested in Voki.

Voki, as I know, is a free web application which allow me to create a personalized speaking avatar. I can upload my voice or just type in some text and let the system to convert text into voice. Upon the creation, I can embed my avatar to other web applications including blogs, wiki and even my personal web pages.

Besides the normal usage, I would like to learn more about how voki is used in classroom. I have a quick search and found many different ways to use Voki in classroom. Here are the few selected links:
    http://blog.voki.com/2007/07/team-voki-is-so.html
    http://www.squidoo.com/voki

In my opinion, Voki is an interesting and attractive media which is still not being explored on teaching and learning.

  7. For ICT tools learnt in MITE6302, most of the tools are related to web2.0 and free of charge. Such as
    Voki, an online buddy which you can simply type in the text and it will speak for you on your web, so that the webpage can be read by the blind also;
PbWiki, a free platform for the participants to contribute the ideas or work together. It can be done easily because it has a template for you to edit and user-friendly. It is better to use rather and using "blogspot" as it can insert different gadgets and others popular tools, e.g. slideshows, voki, youtude etc.. So we can group all the relating stuffs together.

  8. Hot Potatoes provide different types of activities like Cloze, Quiz, Cross, Match and Mix that could suit the 3 stages in KWL model. In "What I know" stage, we can use JMatch to access students' prior knowledge. In "What I want to know" stage, JCloze, JCross and JMix could be used to how students' strengthen and weakness and plan for what they should learn. At last, JQuiz could be used in "What did I learn" stage to check what actually have been learnt in the whole learning process.

  9. I think WebQuest is a useful tool for teaching students on how to use and find information on the Internet. They need to evaluate and select the useful information on a specific topic assigned by their teacher and then build up a WebQuest.

  12. What do I know?
Before the module, I had used some ICT tools like Google Docs, Blogs, Flash, Photostory, Frontpage, Scratch and Visual basic.

What do I want to know?
But these tools can't meet all my needs in teaching and learning. Some of them are complex and expensive. I need some more simple and practical tools.

    What did I learn?

I use Voki for learning cantonese. It really works. When I meet some new words I type it in the Voki and know how to pronounce.

  13. Google Docs is a good presentation tool. It is light-weight and easy to use. It allows teachers could create presentation, spreadsheet and forms easily. So teachers could focus on educational purpose.

It is not only for web access, it also provide mobile access. That means teachers and students could access the it all the time. As the result, teachers and student could work the the material whenever they want. It is possible to design homework and holiday works, such as summer holiday, by using google docs.

  14. Using the KWL model, here are my thoughts:

    K (What do I know?)

Before this course, I had some experience trying to create a WebQuest assignment in Moodle for another course. I have also used the Wiki and Blog functions in Moodle for other classes and used Google Docs for homework purposes.

W (What do I want to know?)

I want to explore different types of technology that can be used in education and to learn how to use those tools.

    L (What did I learn?)

GoogleDocs: I have never used the Survey function before. It was a lot of fun to play with.

Voki: Even though this is a fun tool, it is very limited since you can only record so many words.

HotPotatoes: This is an easy tool to use to create some fun games and drill exercises for students. However, I found it very hard to create a crossword puzzle: it is hard to write good clues and arrange the words to form a crossword.
